Russell Hall at UGA

Project Features

  • The University of Georgia's primary goal when renovating the historic Russell Hall was to support students academically, which VT Architectural Wood Doors was able to assist.
  •  The task of keeping the structural integrity but also modernizing the living environment was realized with the interior finishes, including the architectural wood doors in Glamour Cherry.

Project Overview:

Russell Hall has been home to University of Georgia students in Athens, Georgia since 1967. After 50 years, Russell Hall was aging and becoming less appealing to UGA students who preferred modern living spaces and facilities. So, in 2017 UGA began planning a 15-month, $44.5 million renovation. The goal was to make it feel like a home away from home, prioritizing a sense of community, and reflecting the University's mission of "Supporting Students Academically."

Building Challenge:

The architects were tasked with keeping the structural integrity of the building but creating an updated, modern housing experience for incoming freshman students.  Along with modernizing and creating a more inviting living environment, UGA extended the living capacity to 960 rooms.

VT’s Contribution:

VT manufactured over 800 doors in the Russell Hall renovation. A variety of door types were utilized including SCLC, PC-5, FD-5. To meet life-safety requirements, the doors featured fire ratings ranging from 20-minutes to 90-minutes. The doors were clad in Formica's Glamour Cherry laminate (6208-58).
