The new Inuit Dome in Inglewood, California is a game-changer for not only the sports industry but for all stadium architecture. “A temple for basketball and performing arts for the 21st century,” said Steve Balmer about his new stadium built for his Los Angeles Clippers. The dome’s unique exterior, inspired by a basketball net, is one of many finishes that make this project unique.
Opened in 2024, the $1.8 billion arena complex spans approximately 1.1 million square feet and is dedicated exclusively to basketball and concerts. It will also serve as a venue for the upcoming 2028 Summer Olympics. Designed with an intimate live experience in mind, the 17,800 seats are closer to the action than in most NBA arenas. A seat in Row 20 is 45 feet closer—nearly half a court—than in the Clippers’ previous arena. The venue also features three times as many toilets as the average NBA arena, a fan-centric amenity that ensures attendees won’t miss the live event.
The stadium’s unique architectural and engineering design takes advantage of Southern California’s climate, embracing an indoor-outdoor approach that allows 100% outdoor air circulation within the arena bowl. Intuit Dome has earned LEED Platinum certification from the U.S. Green Building Council and is designed to operate 100% carbon-free. It is powered entirely by 2 megawatts of photovoltaic solar panels installed on the roof. On-site energy storage is sufficient to power a basketball game or concert while generating no new greenhouse gas emissions.
To further enhance the fan experience, the Intuit Dome features a double-sided halo 4K scoreboard—nearly a full acre in size—with more than 233 million LEDs, making it the largest double-sided halo display ever installed in an arena.
VT’S CONTRIBUTION:
VT Industries supplied over 300 doors for the Intuit Dome. Partnering with ISEC, Inc., S&S Hardware, and TEC Management Consultants. VT manufactured a variety of door types, including single and paired flush doors, pocket doors, and bi-fold doors. These doors were paired with a range of core materials to meet the architectural specifications for performance and safety. Core types included particleboard, fire-rated, STC (Sound Transmission Class), and agrifiber cores.
The Intuit Dome is truly a fan-focused stadium, as reflected in the many amenities incorporated throughout the space. To help distinguish between public and private areas, a beautiful assortment of face materials was selected. Veneers were used in more exclusive areas, including a reconstituted Walnut Straight grain veneer and a special flitch of quarter-sliced Walnut veneer with a custom finish. Other veneers included quarter sliced Eucalyptus and rift cut White Oak, both having custom finishes.
Additionally, several high-pressure decorative laminates were chosen, including Black Riftwood from Formica, Natural Recon from Wilsonart, Downtown Urban Walnut from Arborite, and Acero Ottawa from Abet Laminati.
