University of Iowa Children's Hospital

Project Profile
Completed in early 2017, the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital provides a friendly, comfortable environment for children and their families. The hospital is conveniently located across the street from Kinnick Stadium, home of the Iowa Hawkeyes. The embodiment of the teamwork in the hospital is the Press Box, which is located on one of the hospital’s highest floors and has a direct view looking into the stadium to allow patients to experience the excitement of game days without leaving the hospital. 

Building Challenge:
Architects were challenged to create a space that blended the friendly, caring nature of the hospital with the unity and enthusiasm of the Hawkeyes, so that every child could enjoy the fun essence of game days. The doors would need to play a key role in expressing the press box feel while allowing for privacy.

VT’s Contribution:
VT provided 1,168 doors for the 14-floor hospital. Unequal pairs at the entrance of each room allow easy access for doctors and nurses, and make moving equipment in and out of rooms quick and easy. All of the doors contribute to the comfortable, clean feel of the hospital, helping patients enjoy the spirit of Hawkeye football. When inspiration hits, VT is there.
